Codes and families
Curating signal codes, and grouping them into EBS families.
The Codes tab is where signal codes are given the meaning DHIS2 cannot hold for them.
Where codes come from
The codes themselves live in DHIS2, in the option set chosen in the Grammar step, and are read live — adding an option in DHIS2 makes it appear here without any action in eCEBS.
Two things are ours rather than DHIS2's, because DHIS2 has nowhere to put them:
- the EBS family a code belongs to, and
- the Kinyarwanda description of what the code means.
Set the option set first
Until an option set is chosen in the Grammar step there are no codes to curate, and the tab says so. Families and codes are also stored against the flow, so a flow that has never been saved must be saved before either can be edited.
Defining families
A family is a grouping over codes, defined from an option set of its own. Choose the family option set, then add the families the flow needs. A code can then be assigned to one of them.
Families are worth defining before working through the codes, because assigning a family is part of completing each code.
Curating codes
The table lists each code with its option UID, EBS type, Kinyarwanda description, and status. Search filters by code or by text; the filters narrow to everything, or to just the codes that still need attention, or group the view by family.
A code's status is one of:
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Complete | Has both a family and a description |
| Needs a family | Has a description but no family |
| Needs a description | Has a family but no Kinyarwanda description |
| Needs both | Neither has been set |
Assign the family first — a description cannot be saved against a code that has no family yet.
Why the descriptions matter
The Kinyarwanda description is what makes a code readable to the people working with the signals rather than only to whoever configured it. The publishing view reports how many of the codes carry one, and it is the single most common reason a flow is technically publishable but not yet ready.
